A Piece of Jamaican Cricket History

The Melbourne Cricket Club in Kingston, founded in 1892, is one of the oldest sporting institutions in the Caribbean. Our pavilion — a beautiful colonial-era wooden structure — has hosted legendary West Indian cricketers from George Headley to Courtney Walsh. But decades of hurricane damage, termite infestation, and deferred maintenance have taken their toll.

The Restoration

Working with the Jamaica National Heritage Trust, we will restore the pavilion to its 1920s grandeur while adding modern amenities: a proper media centre, accessible facilities, upgraded seating for 400, and a cricket museum showcasing Jamaican cricket memorabilia dating back to the 1890s.

Community Impact

Melbourne CC runs cricket programmes for over 200 young players from surrounding communities. The restored pavilion will include dedicated changing rooms for our junior squads and a classroom space for after-school tutoring — because we believe in developing the whole person, not just the cricketer.

We have already exceeded our goal thanks to the incredible generosity of the cricket community. Every additional dollar goes toward the museum collection and junior programme equipment.

Risks & challenges

Heritage restoration is inherently unpredictable — hidden structural damage may emerge once walls are opened up. We have engaged a structural engineer and have a 15% contingency built into the budget. The Heritage Trust provides technical oversight at no cost.

My grandfather played at Melbourne in the 1950s. To see the pavilion restored would mean everything to our family. Backed the Heritage Match tier — see you there!
